TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — On the eve of the most important race of her life, the Tokyo Olympics women’s 400-meter hurdles semifinal, Anna Cockrell phoned her brother, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Ross Cockrell, who had won a Super Bowl.
Anna Cockrell overcame severe depression, to the point that she stated, “In 2019, I didn’t want to be here longer,” to become a two-time NCAA champion, receive a master’s degree in public policy from USC, and give the school’s student-athlete graduation address.
Ross Cockrell described her as “a brilliant light.” “So I simply told her to appreciate the experience and all of the hard work she’d put in to get to this point. Yes, it is the Olympics, and she is on a huge platform, so she should be nervous and excited about what is going to happen. The most important thing I told her was to ‘breathe, do it, and let her light show.’ That’s something we discuss often. We have a little joke about her ‘charging up her stars.’”
The Buccaneers gathered in a huge auditorium under a gigantic screen just before practice Monday at 7:55 a.m. to witness the third 400-meter hurdles semifinal. Anna Cockrell rose from the rain-soaked heat to pass Viktorija Tkachuk and finish second with a timing of 54.17 seconds, securing a place in the final in her maiden Olympic Games.
Ross Cockrell stated, “She gutted it out in the end.” “My heart was beating against the inside of my chest. Just seeing her run made me sweat. I mean, it was difficult for me to sleep last night, so I’m hoping she slept well.”

She experienced the same comeback magic in the Olympic trials, when she surged from sixth to third in the final turn for a personal-best 53.70.
Coach Bruce Arians remarked, “It was amazing, dude.” “We were all holding our breath. It was a nail-biter of a race, and she came in strong at the end. I mean, the whole room blew up. I’m very pleased for him.”
Not to be outdone, Buccaneers CB Ross Cockrell, who has alternated between cornerback and safety owing to injuries to the Buccaneers’ safeties, had a great session with three interceptions.
“It was incredible to be able to see my sister race with this squad and this family,” Cockrell said. “It was the greatest race of her life, and to watch her perform as brilliantly as she did, in difficult weather and in tough circumstances, and then to go out to practice and be able to do my thing, I was just feeling the magic she had. I believe she sent it to me.”
He said, “I was simply feeding off her power.” “I was able to continue once she gave me the magic. It’s a wonderful feeling and a wonderful time for our family.”

Due to Tuesday’s late start time of 10:30 p.m. ET, which is just before curfew, Arians stated the team would not host a watch party for the final, although Ross Cockrell intends to watch the race with teammates in the hotel. There will be watch parties among family members in Louisiana, Washington, D.C., and New York, as well.
“After practice, we handed Mom and Dad a game ball because the kids are who they’re meant to be, but Mom and Dad did a fantastic job raising them.” According to Arians.
“Y’ALL GOT ME CRYING IN THE VILLAGE DINING HALL,” Anna Cockrell wrote after watching the video of the Buccaneers cheering her on. When she found out about her brother’s interceptions, she cracked a joke “Wow, you’ve forced me to share the limelight today. Just joking. This is fantastic, and he should go ahead and do it.”
